About

Description:

This video provides an introduction by Franko Figueiredo to his practice of Meta Legislative Theatre. His summary raises important points about social change, collective responsibility and mutual care. After a collective exercise based on reimagining the story of the 'Ugly Duckling' a facilitated conversation between participants discusses how the process of transformation is done through engagement.

The session was recorded on the 11th September 2020 as part of Intercultural Roots’ Constellations 1 programme entitled Art & Activism.

Meta Legislative Theatre is an applied theatrical form from the genre of 'Theatre of the Oppressed’ as first described by Brazilian theatre practitioner Augusto Boal in the 1970s. Boal was influenced by the work of the educator and theorist Paulo Freire. In breaking down the fourth wall that separates actors and audience, the audience becomes active, such that as 'spect-actors' they explore, show, analyse and transform the reality in which they are living.

The aim of Meta Legislative Theatre is to give the audience the opportunity to voice their opinions. It opens dialogue to allow flows of power or 'transitive democracy’. The audience is encouraged to, through the practical investigation of storytelling, engage in meaningful dialogue and real purpose, thereby helping with the creation of socio-political change.
