Full Description:

Intercultural Roots invites and welcomes you to attend a series of four fully-funded community theater workshops with CHILDCARE funds allocated in case needed.

Session Dates:
Thursday 7th,14th & 21th November, 6pm-8pm
Thursday 28th November (sharing session) 5pm-8pm

Volunteer training 16th November, 6pm-8pm. This session is an opportunity for participants to train as support for facilitators.

You will have the opportunity to share what matters to you through 'Forum Theatre' developed by Brazilian theatre director and author Augusto Boal. The method, also known as Theatre of the Oppressed, is designed to engage audiences and participants in exploring social and political issues through interactive and immersive theater.

The dynamic and often playful exchange of Forum Theatre allows you to become a 'spect-actor' and to step into the shoes someone else's story and their remembered characters and scenes. The approach will allow you to identify with experiences other members of your community may share, with the opportunity to share experiences of your own. Gentle guidance and facilitation from theatre specialists Almiro and Andrea, allows different strategies and outcomes to be explored that may well be helpful in addressing some of the issues portrayed in the scene. It's a powerful method for raising awareness, promoting critical thinking, and collectively brainstorming solutions to real-world problems.

Your facilitators will be Dr. Almiro Andrade (Black Queer Latinx actor, director, playwright, dramaturg, educationist, and theatre translator) and Manuela Benini (dance, carnival and artistic director).
Together they will sensitively guide the workshops, inviting participants to express themselves in a safe and non-judgmental space, and to engage in a playful collaborative theatre dynamic. This social applied theatre intends to reverse vicious cycles of deprivation through empowering those living with fear and violence.
