About

Dr Deepa Mahadevan is a research practitioner. She practices as a performer and teacher of the Neo-classical dance form called Bharatanatyam originating from South India. For over three decades she has been performing Bharatanatyam as a soloist internationally.

Deepa founded Tiruchitrambalam school of dance in 2004. Through Tiruchitrambalam she continues to train students around the world in Bharatanatyam. As the artistic director of Tiruchitrambalam she has conceived, choreographed and conducted over 30 evening-length solo dance recitals for her students. Deepa is a community leader and through her dance she has raised awareness and funds for deserving causes. She has promoted, and curated many new works of both artists  from within the United States and outside.

Her doctoral research examines the vectors of caste, class, sex, gender and religion in the performance of Bharatanatyam dance. She is specifically interested in the ways in which these vectors have been translating into the aesthetics of the dance form since the early twentieth century. Her teaching practice is an important aspect of her research where she delves deeper into the manner in which Bharatanatyam aesthetics takes shape in the techniques of transmission, specifically in the Indian diaspora space in North America and generally in classrooms all over the world.
